Birmingham blast Team GB announcement minutes before kick-off

Birmingham City have complained to the FA after goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, along with several other players, discovered she was not on Team GB's shortlist for the Tokyo Olympics just 90 minutes before their match against Everton in the Women's Super League.

Hampton was visibly upset by the news and made several mistakes in the 4-0 defeat. City head coach Carla Ward said: "We spent 45 minutes with her [before kick-off] and she was deeply upset. Our focus should have been on the game and her focus should have been on the game.

"We didn't know if we were playing her or not. Everybody saw a Hannah Hampton performance which isn't Hannah Hampton-esque."

The FA has accepted the timing of the announcement was wrong, with a statement adding: "We take full responsibility for the upset this has caused."
