Mjelde injury takes shine off Chelsea's Conti Cup win

Chelsea successfully defended their Continental Tyres League Cup title with a 6-0 victory at Vicarage Road against Bristol City, but the match was marred by a serious injury to defender Maren Mjelde.

Although the Norway international tweeted that the knee injury was not as bad as first feared, she will be out for the rest of the season.

Despite Mjelde's distress, the Blues were dominant in the final. Sam Kerr scored a hat-trick with each of her goals set up by Fran Kirby - the Lionesses star scoring twice as well as providing the assist for all of Chelsea's other goals.

Chelsea head coach Emma Hayes said: "Today was a performance from a team that is very confident at the moment.

"Qualifying for the quarters of the Champions League has given us so much confidence.

"I thought we were unbelievable for the first 60 minutes. The pace, the intensity, the cohesiveness of the team. Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby were unbelievable today."
