The England and Wales Cricket Board hope a tri-nation series involving India and South Africa later in the summer can rescue the season for England and also help repair the damage done to their finances by the coronavirus crisis.

The men's game will resume when the West Indies visit England for a three-Test series next month but the women's summer series against India has been postponed.

South Africa are still due to visit the UK in September but the trip could be brought forward as the ECB examine ways to recover from the pandemic.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4, ECB Director of Special Projects, Steve Elworthy, was asked if the women's team was part of the plan to plug the hole in their finances following the postponement of the new Hundred competition.

"Your point about the women's series is absolutely spot on," Elworthy said. "We've been in discussion with India and South Africa about a potential tri-series at the back end of the summer."

The former South Africa bowler added: "We certainly don't want to lose the impetus behind women's cricket and women's sport. So, it's certainly something that's on the radar for us and we're working very closely to get it over the line."
