Premier League WSL takeover fails to find support

Most Women's Super League clubs would prefer to remain independent rather than be run by the Premier League.

The Guardian reports there are fears the focus under Premier League control would be on maximising commercial revenues rather than developing players, coaches and grassroots football.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has previously stated his personal desire to take control of the women's elite game and the subject has been discussed by the Premier League board - although any decision has been delayed until 2021.

The Football Association currently run the WSL and Championship but are understood to be keen to hand over responsibility and have consulted with the Premier League on a long-term plan for the women's leagues.

However, any changes in control would have to be ratified by the WSL board, which is made up of representatives from the clubs, the FA and independent members.
