England legend Edwards named Southern Vipers head coach

The Southern Vipers have named Charlotte Edwards as their head coach for the new elite women's domestic competition which is still planned to start this summer, despite the current suspension of women's cricket due to coronavirus.

Edwards, who captained England to victory in the World Cup, Twenty20 World Cup and the Ashes, will step down from her role as Director of Women's Cricket at Hampshire to lead the new franchise.

The ECB competition, which will see eight new regions competing against each other, has been created to offer female players across the country the best opportunity to reach their full potential.

"I am thrilled and honoured to be named as head coach of the Southern Vipers," Edwards said. "It’s an incredibly exciting time for the women’s game with the introduction of the new Elite Structure Competition.

"I am looking forward to working with the extremely talented players we have within our region, with our main purpose to develop a successful Southern Vipers culture and future England cricketers."
