World Cup winner joins Manchester City

Manchester City have signed 2019 World Cup winner Sam Mewis from North Carolina Courage.

The 27-year-old has fetured 67 times for her country and was a key player in last year's World Cup campaign.

Mewis told BBC Sport: "I feel so lucky to have the opportunity. I thought it would be cool to play overseas one day and for a club like Manchester City. I feel really lucky and really fortunate to have this opportunity."

The midfielder becomes City's second summer signing after England striker Chloe Kelly joined from Everton.

Sam will bring some much needed experience to this Manchester City women's side. Standing 6 feet tall, she is unusually tall for a midfielder, but is more than useful when it comes to a target person at set pieces.

Mewis has made 53 appearances for Courage and has scored 11 goals to date. For her national side she has netted 18 times in 67 appearances.

Her USA team mate Rose Lavelle has been heavily linked with a move to City as well. Should that move eventually come off then a mouthwatering midfield alongside Caroline Weir and Jill Scott would certainly be a sight worth seeing.
