Serena Williams recovered from a set and three break points down to beat Bernarda Pera at the Top Seed Open, her first event since February.

The 23-times Grand Slam champion lost the first set 6-4 and was 0-40 on her serve at 4-4 in the second but rallied to a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to set up a second round match against her sister Venus.

British No.1 Johanna Konta revealed she suffered from heart palpitations during her opening round defeat to Marie Bouzkova. Konta had to seek medical attention but was allowed to complete the match, which she lost 6-4, 6-4.

"My heart rate shoots up for no reason," Konta said. "It actually goes up and stays there so it makes me a bit lightheaded - I just needed to see the doctor and the physio.

"It was very high when they came out. I was having all the checks. I am as fit as a fiddle but it can happen. It took a while to settle down but then it did and I was able to concentrate on the tennis."

Heather Watson also lost on her WTA Tour return, losing 6-2, 6-1 to Jennifer Brady
