Women's Super League review: big win for City but United go top

Only three fixtures survived the wintry weather at the weekend but there was still plenty of movement in the top four. Manchester United returned to the top, overtaking Chelsea - who will have to reschedule their trip to Bristol City - thanks to a 2-0 victory against Birmingham City.

Despite dominating the match, United had to remain patient until the start of the second half when Leah Galton scored straight after the restart. Ella Toone added the second late on.

Manchester City enjoyed their trip to the south coast, beating Brighton 7-1. It was a special day for England defender Steph Houghton, who became the first player to reach 150 appearances in the Women's Super League and celebrated by scoring twice.

Caroline Weir also added a brace and there were further goals for Ellen White, Chloe Kelly and Janine Beckie as City moved above Arsenal into third.

The only other game to go ahead saw Aston Villa leave it late to grab a 2-2 draw with Reading. Angharad James had given the Royals an early lead before Mana Iwabuchi levelled in the second half. Reading were back in front within two minutes thanks to Rachel Rowe but Villa salvaged a first home point of the season when Diana Silva scored in injury time.
