Women's Rugby World Cup set to smash attendance records
Attendances at the forthcoming Women's World Cup are set to exceed all expectations, with ticket sales for the whole tournament now standing at two and a half times the total sold at the last Women's World Cup in New Zealand. And with the final now officially a sell-out, the all-time attendance record for a single women's rugby game seems certain to be smashed.
Fans have snapped up an incredible 375,000 tickets for the tournament, which gets under way on Friday 22nd August. For comparison, 140,000 people attended New Zealand Women's World Cup in 2022. The opening match alone at Sunderland FC's Stadium of Light between England and the USA is expected to draw in excess of 40,000, and may well hit the venue's 49,000 capacity.
The final will be held on to be held on 27th September at Twickenham's iconic Allianz Stadium. With all of the stadium's 82,000 seats sold, the game is certain to beat the current record attendances at a women's 15s rugby game of 58,498, set when England beat France to claim the 2023 Six Nations Grand Slam - also at Twickenham.
Speaking to the BBC, Gill Whitehead, chair of the 2025 Rugby World Cup said:
We are very confident the final will be the most attended women's rugby match in history. The prospect of the girls running out of the tunnel to the three tiers of a packed Allianz Stadium is something I never hoped or thought I would see. It is what girls' dreams are made of.
