US Open to go ahead despite Covid cancellation

The US Open will go ahead as planned in August and September despite the cancellation of the first ATP Tour event due to take place since the tennis season was suspended in March.

The women's WTA Tour is due to resume at the Palermo Open in Italy on 3 August. The men were meant to return at the Washington Open the following week but that event will now not be played because of 'too many unresolved issues' surrounding the coronavirus crisis.

But the United States Tennis Association has vowed to stage the US Open as planned behind closed doors as long as guidelines on health and safety, the interest of the sport and financial viability continue to be met.

"We are confident we remain in line with these three guiding principles," it said in a statement.
