Konta confident US Open will go ahead

Johanna Konta still believes the US Open will go ahead next month despite the sport's stuttering return from lockdown.

Both the WTA Tour and ATP have been forced to cancel further events due to the continuing coronavirus crisis, although the WTA is set to return at the Palermo Open in Italy starting on 3 August.

World No.14 Konta begins her preparations at this week's Battle of the Brits Team Tennis tournament and is scheduled to play in Palermo.

The US Open will be behind closed doors but has retained its slot in the calendar from 31 August to 13 September, despite concerns it would be affected by the cancellation of the Washington Open on the men's ATP Tour.

"Everything is pointing in the direction that it is going to go ahead," said the British No.1.

"They have been quite vocal that they are pushing forwards. Just basing my opinion on all the information that is there, I think it probably will."
