Organisers of the rescheduled French Open have revealled plans to play in front of socially distanced crowds when the event takes place in September.

There are hopes up to 60% of fans will be able to attend, the equivalent of 20,000 a day. Groups of four will be able to sit together with an empty seat between those groups.

The main Court Philippe-Chatrier's usual capacity is 15,500, so more than 9,000 fans would be able to attend the women's and men's finals.

Exact numbers are still subject to French rules governing social distancing but there is optimism even more spectators might be able to access tickets by the time the tournament takes place.

French federation president Bernard Giudicelli said: "We went for the responsible option. Should the situation evolve in the right direction, new tickets would be available in September."

Facemasks will be mandatory for people walking around Roland Garros and fans will be encouraged to keep them on whilst watching matches.

The French Open was moved from its usual May/June slot in the calendar whilst Wimbledon was cancelled completely. The US Open will take place as planned in August and September but it will be behind closed doors.
